Health Promotion Officer (HPO)

Qualification Development:

A Health Promotion Officer (HPO) is a dedicated Community Health Worker specializing in primary healthcare. With a strong emphasis on health promotion, the HPO is committed to proactively assessing and identifying community health needs. Their role involves intervening in primary healthcare activities to enhance overall health and well-being within the community.

WHY STUDY HPO?

  • Carry out basic assessments of communities, households, groups and individuals;
  • Provide basic health education and referrals for a wide range of services; and
  • Support and assist in navigating the health and social service system.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS QUALIFICATION IS TO PREPARE A LEARNER TO:

  • Conduct community, household and individual health assessments and identify health needs and risks (actual and potential) and facilitate the family or an individual to seek the appropriate health service.
  • Promote the health of the households and individuals within households.
  • Refer persons for further assessment and testing after performing simple basic screening.
  • Provide limited, simple health interventions in a household (e.g., basic first aid, oral rehydration, and any other basic interventions such as treatment defaulter tracing and adherence support.

Minimum Admission Requirements:

  •  Grade 10, 11 AND 12
  • Ancillary Health Care NQF Level 1

Examinations

Learners will write an External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA) exam, once they have completed their knowledge, practical and work experience modules. It is a single national assessment leading to the awarding of an Occupational Certificate. EISA is administered by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO). Learners who pass the national examinations will be awarded an Occupational Certificate.
